Perfect Combination - Drum and Bass Producer Interview

March 2004

Interview with Perfect Combination, drum and bass producer and Freeform Records label manager.

Freeform Records

Freeform Records

How old are you?

Getting on a bit.

How did you get into the drum and bass Scene?

Addicted to buying tunes in the early eighties and got a liking to bass and breaks and watched the scene develop from soul to acid house to hardcore and then to drum and bass.

How long have you been producing music and what did you do before you started djing / producing music?

Been producing nearly 10 years, what did I do before this? Was at school.

What are your musical influences?

How long do you spend in the studio a week (on average)?

On average… there's never an average.

What software / equipment do you use to produce your music?

Do you produce any music other than drum and bass?

Yeah, breaks and hip-hop down beat.

Which other producers / artists out there would you most like to work with?

What tunes do you rate that are doing the rounds drum and bass circuit at the moment?

Too many… which is always good, the scene is yet again twisting into new pathways and I like the new walks I'm taking.

Do you have a favourite tune of all time?

No, I have a top 50 perhaps.

Is there any one tune you would really like to remix?

No.

How often do you get out clubbing?

Now… only when I'm playing to be honest.

Do you have a favourite event or club night?

Yes Canada… lovely place, wicked people and good club nights.

What was the last record / CD you bought?

Fuck knows.

What are your views on the drum and bass scene at present and where do you see it heading in the near future?

I'm sick of answering this question… try imagine you saying the same thing about hip-hop 10 years ago and you will get my drift.

It's Sunday afternoon and you are chilling out at home, what is on the stereo?

Tubular Bells

Do you have any other interests or pastimes outside the music scene?

Yeah, shit loads. I play football for AFC Bury, I also love motor racing, getting leathered with my mates and eating shit loads of food when I'm pissed up.

What are your plans for the future and what do you have in the pipeline at the moment?

Concentrating this year on a steady amount of releases on Freeform Records with a few EPs and tours to go with it. Playing Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US.
